Fifth Grade Math

Curriculum & Resources

All curriculum is purchased by Ignite Entrepreneurship Academy for your use. Unused portions (textbooks etc) are returned to Ignite.

The following curriculum links have been organized according to grade levels. Choose the level of curriculum that meets your child’s needs for each subject area. There are links to placement tests where applicable.

Your Educational Specialist will be able to help guide you in your curriculum selection.

Math Mammoth

Focuses on the understanding of mathematical concepts. Uses clear explanations, lots of visual exercises and pattern exercises. Mastery oriented: concentrates fairly long on a topic, with fairly few topics per grade.Emphasizes mental math and developing number sense. Very little teacher preparation needed.

Math - U - See

Math-U-See combines hands-on methodology with incremental instruction and continual review in this manipulative-based program. It excels in its hands-on presentation of math concepts that enables students to understand how math works. It is one of the rare multisensory math programs that continues to use manipulatives up through Algebra 1.

Primary Math

Singapore math is a teaching method based on the national mathematics curriculum used for kindergarten through sixth grade in Singapore. The term was coined in the United States to describe an approach originally developed in Singapore to teach students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts at greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using a three-step learning process: concrete, pictorial, and abstract. In the concrete step, students engage in hands-on learning experiences using concrete objects such as chips, dice, or paper clips. This is followed by drawing pictorial representations of mathematical concepts. Students then solve mathematical problems in an abstract way by using numbers and symbols.

Mathematical Reasoning

Mathematical Reasoning™ books help students devise strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems. These highly effective activities use step-by-step, discussion-based problem-solving and computation to build the math reasoning skills necessary for success in higher-level math and math assessments. This book is written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Activities and units spiral slowly, allowing students to become comfortable with concepts but also challenging them to continue building their math skills.

Right Start Math

Mathematics is a complete elementary and middle-school program that uses visualization of quantities, de-emphasizes counting, and provides strategies and games for learning the facts. The primary learning tool is the AL Abacus, a specially designed two-sided abacus that is both kinesthetic and visual.

Saxon Math

Saxon math, developed by John Saxon, is a teaching method for incremental learning of mathematics. It involves teaching a new mathematical concept every day and constantly reviewing old concepts. Early editions were deprecated for providing very few opportunities to practice the new material before plunging into a review of all previous material. Newer editions typically split the day’s work evenly between practicing the new material and reviewing old material. Its primary strength is in a steady review of all previous material, which is especially important to students who struggle with retaining the math they previously learned.

Beast Academy

Beast Academy books provide a curriculum that is both rigorous and complete as well as engaging and entertaining. Each grade is split into four parts (A-D). For each part, there is a Guide and a Practice book. Guides provide instruction delivered by the Academy instructors in a comic book style that encourages reasoning and problem-solving. Practice books provide hundreds of problems, puzzles, and games to reinforce the lessons.

Teaching Textbooks

Early primary-grade math lays the framework for all later mathematical skills and is also vitally important for everyday life. Ensure that your students understand every aspect of adding and subtracting multiple numbers, writing fractions, carrying, multiplication, money, telling time, advanced place value, mental multiplication, whole numbers, decimals, perimeter, area, temperature, the metric system, and bar & line graphs with Teaching Textbooks 3. The workbook contains all the problem and practice sets, as well as written summaries of each lecture; the summaries conveniently allow children to skim over the text instead of re-watching the lecture if they forget a key point.

ALEKS (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces) is a research-based, web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning online math program for grades 3-12. ALEKS provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction and is accessible from virtually any computer with Internet access. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to adjust the learning modules presented. A placement assessment is used to determine a student’s knowledge in a course, and periodic reassessments help ensure knowledge retention. ALEKS is web-based and accessible on both Windows and Mac systems. ALEKS is a division of McGraw-Hill Education.

Illustrative Math

Illustrative Math K–5 sparks student engagement and fosters conceptual understanding of the underlying mathematics principles. IM K–5 Math sparks student engagement and fosters conceptual understanding of the underlying mathematics principles. Students use mathematics to make mathematical connections and develop conceptual understanding. Students enjoy mathematics while they discuss and defend their reasoning.

Above all else, we love kids. Their individuality, their abilities, their passions. Children are amazing people and we consider ourselves lucky to work with them everyday.
